Before using
WARNING: Infrequently, a very serious, life-threatening
decrease in the amount of blood supply to the hands and feet
(peripheral ischemia) and rarely to the brain can occur when
this medication is taken with drugs that affect liver
metabolism (e.g., potent CYP 3A4 enzyme inhibitors). Do not
take this medicine with macrolide antibiotics (e.g.,
erythromycin, clarithromycin, troleandomycin), protease
inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, nelfinavir, indinavir, amprenavir,
saquinavir), or azole antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole,
itraconazole). Some medicines or medical conditions may
interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST
of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine you are
taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking
telithromycin, delavirdine, efavirenz, voriconazole,
sibutramine, dexfenfluramine, fenfluramine, or "triptan"
migraine drugs (e.g., sumatriptan). ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF
YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking
dopamine, nitrates (isosorbide, nitroglycerin), nefazodone,
fluconazole, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, zileuton, metronidazole,
clotrimazole, beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol), nicotine
(e.g., tobacco, nicotine patches), caffeine, or other mild CYP
3A4 inhibitors. Consult your pharmacist for more information.
Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including
history of smoking/tobacco use, allergies, pregnancy, or
breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you
have a history of high blood pressure or heart or kidney
conditions. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any
questions or concerns about using this medicine.
Directions
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your
doctor. BEGIN USING THIS MEDICINE at the first sign of an
attack. IF THE SUPPOSITORY IS TOO SOFT TO USE, put it in the
refrigerator for about 15 minutes or run cold water over it.
Then remove the wrapper and moisten the suppository with cool
water. Lie down on your side. Use your finger to push the
pointed end of the suppository well up into the rectum. Wash
your hands thoroughly after using this medicine. DO NOT EXCEED
THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or use this medicine for longer than
prescribed without checking with your doctor. Do not use daily
on a regular basis. In adults, do not use more than 2
suppositories per attack or more than 5 suppositories in a
week. AVOID EATING GRAPEFRUIT OR DRINKING GRAPEFRUIT JUICE
WHILE USING THIS MEDICINE. STORE THIS MEDICINE as directed on
the prescription label.
Cautions
IF YOUR SYMPTOMS DO NOT IMPROVE or if they become worse, check
with your doctor. AVOID LARGE AMOUNTS OF caffeine-containing
foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, cocoa, cola drinks,
and chocolate. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE,
either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your
doctor or pharmacist. FOR WOMEN: DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if
you are pregnant. IF YOU SUSPECT THAT YOU COULD BE PREGNANT,
contact your doctor immediately. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN
BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.
Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include
nausea, vomiting, weakness of the legs, or arm or leg pain. If
they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor.
CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience numbness or
tingling of your fingers or toes, chest pain, change in heart
rate, bluish discoloration of the fingers and toes, or
itching. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact
your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
